You know you want to spend time enjoying one of the beautiful Bay Islands, but which one - Roatan, Utila, or Guanaja? Before you choose one of these great islands though, it pays to know a bit more about them as well as what they have to offer. This will help you to get a bit closer in choosing the one that’s just right for you. Whether you are vacationing or looking for a new place to call home, you will not be disappointed with the Bay Islands.
- Undiscovered Guanaja
Guanaja is located 43 miles off the coast of Honduras. As with all of the Bay Islands you will find beautiful Caribbean waters with great diving and snorkeling. Other activities include hiking and fishing, and you can spend some time exploring the unique towns of Bonacca and Savannah Bight. Guanaja is the least visited of the Bay Islands, and is somewhat still completely undiscovered, you will find some boutique hotels and dive shops which are family owned and operated and offer not just great facilities but a chance to spend sometime with friendly local families.
- Budget Utila
Utila is the smallest of the major Bay Islands. Just like Guanaja, it is a beautiful location with excellent diving and snorkeling. The island features more than eighty great dive locations, and is one of the best places in the world to see a whale shark! Utila consists of one major settlement and is a popular destination for budget travelers and is great place to discover island living or diving on a budget. The islands friendly residents are very welcoming and most are involved in the local tourism industry and work very hard to make Utila a world-class destination.
- Popular Roatan
Roatan is the largest of the major Bay Islands, the most visited and the most accessible. Roatan is the key entry point to the Bay Islands with direct weekly flights from major USA and Canada cities. The island is also home to two cruiseship ports - the Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay, the Bay Island’s only golf course at Pristine Bay, and some of the regions leading dive and boutique beach resorts. Roatan is still though very charming and quiet, due to the islands landscape, of rolling hills, coves and beaches it never really feels busy.
- Tips on Choosing the Right Island
Once you’ve started your research on the different Bay Islands, you really need to make a list of the things that are the most important to you. The right island will have the things that you enjoy doing, and it will have the facilities and features you need. If you are vacationing, your choice might be different than if you are moving to the island. For example, you could find a small, quiet place on Guanaja where there are fewer people if you are hoping for a relaxed getaway. If you are buying a place to use as a rental property, then you might find that Roatan has more to offer. It really depends on what you need. One thing is guaranteed – you will not be disappointed with the Bay Islands not matter which one you choose.
